Innovative Social Work Practice with Children and Families

Course aim

To advance students’ specialist knowledge of practice theories and skills for innovative social work with clients with special needs in a range of practice settings.

Course content

The students will develop knowledge of the diffusion of innovation in relation to new and emerging programs, policies and practices for working with children and families. The course will explore contemporary approaches in social work assessment and intervention. Students will develop specialised knowledge about intervention and preventative strategies in child abuse and child and family well-being. This includes how abuse and neglect affects child/human development risks, as well as resilience and child and family developmental opportunities in major life stage transitions. Students will critically analyse the impact of child protection policies in the context of historical policies that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.
