Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop student skills in the application of podiatry assessment and treatment techniques, including surgical techniques, to develop student knowledge about issues affecting rural health delivery and skills in the application of physical techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of common ailments of the lower limb.

Course content

Supervised clinical practice. Clinical techniques in the management of the routine and at risk patient. Clinical Pharmacology in podiatry practice. Community screening and education practices. Rural health placement. Assessment techniques for surgical management; Operating room procedures and protocols; Patient education techniques ; Principles of ethical practice in surgical treatment – consent, definitions of consent, practitioner responsibilities, recording and communications. Gait evaluation, stance and non weight bearing measurements, prescription writing, manufacture and evaluation of orthoses, dispensing techniques. Case studies in clinical practice, clinical problem solving techniques and resources.
