The aim of this course is to develop student skills in the application of podiatry assessment and treatment techniques, including surgical techniques, knowledge about issues affecting rural health delivery and skills in the application of physical techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of common ailments of the lower limb.
Supervised clinical practice. Clinical techniques in the management of the routine and “at risk” patient in various clinical settings; assessment techniques for surgical management; operating room procedures and protocols; patient education techniques; principles of ethical practice in surgical treatment – consent, definitions of consent, practitioner responsibilities, recording and communications. Surgical practice and observation. Case studies in clinical practice, clinical problem solving techniques and resources. Electrotherapy treatment modalities: ultrasound, laser, heat/cold; Massage: lower limb techniques. Diagnostic modalities: Doppler ultrasound, biothesiometry, plethysmography; muscle testing techniques. Rural Health Workshop: Primary Health Care principles in the rural health setting, issues in service delivery; case studies in podiatry management in rural and remote settings; role of the multidisciplinary health team; role of outreach services; management of podiatry emergencies; workforce planning; health promotion in rural context; Aboriginal cultural awareness; issues in delivery of services to the ATSI communities. Clinical site visit.
