Surgical Pathology Workbook

Course aim

To gain on site experience in the performance of the surgical pathology cut-up process appropriate to enable the student to identify, process, select and record surgical specimens according to the NPAAC Guidelines.

Course content

Students will receive a program of instruction and supervised work practice as described in the NPAAC Guidelines for surgical pathology specimen preparation. The program is based on the development of competency in surgical cut-up and passes through five levels: observation of the cut-up, supervised practice involving only tissue transfer (simple specimens), supervised cut-up of non-complex specimens, limited independent practice, autonomous practice. Students are expected to become competent in dissection of each tissue listed under the NPAAC Guidelines as non-complex. Study of the cut-up manual.
