Course aim

To acquaint students with the theory and principles of electromagnetism and electromechanical energy conversion devices and systems.

Course content

Electromagnetism and magnetic circuits, magnetic losses, permanent magnet, and production of force. DC machines - operation and classification, characteristics, losses, efficiency, starting and speed control, and dynamic models and characteristics. Transformers - equivalent circuits, voltage regulation and efficiency, determination of parameters, autotransformers, and 3-phase transformers. Three-phase induction machines – operation and equivalent circuit, performance calculations, torque-speed characteristic, starting and speed control of induction motors. Modelling, operation and characteristics of induction generators. Synchronous machines – operation, equivalent circuit, phasor diagram and characteristics for both generator and motor operations. Overview of some special purpose machines.
