Course aim

The aim of this course is to acquaint students with traditional and modern investment theories and practices. This will entail an examination of investment evaluation theories and techniques for a range of financial assets; and of portfolio management practices. At the conclusion students should be familiar with current industry practice and have an understanding of the theoretical framework supporting investment analysis and portfolio management. Students will gain confidence in a range of techniques, and develop a capacity for independent thought and critical analysis, in the areas of investment analysis and portfolio management. As spreadsheets are the primary instrument used by financial analysts, security analysts and in most “real world” finance positions, students have the opportunity to develop applied skills in using spreadsheets for financial modelling. Students will also be exposed to a variety of research papers.

Course content

Risk Analysis; Extreme Portfolio Selection; Event Studies in Finance; Mutual Fund Performance; Derivative Market; Energy Market; Corporate Finance; Corporate Governance; International Finance; Environmental Finance; Technical Analysis; Latest developments in the field.
