Course aim

To describe and explain the scientific and engineering properties, performance and use of materials and components in modern construction.

Course content

Properties of building materials, including their specification and failure. Structural, fire, environmental, dimensional, health and acoustic properties.

Primary construction materials and products, including clay, stone, steel, aluminium, wood, cement and aggregates.

Secondary construction materials and products, including paints, adhesives, sealants, plastics, renewables, glass and plaster.

The history, architectural application and lifecycle of construction materials and products.
