Course aim

To provide students with an understanding of how physical infrastructure is planned for and provided as part of the process of urban and regional development

Course content

Water provision. Stormwater management and catchment planning. Transport provision. Resource efficiency. Urban food production. Waste management. Energy efficient development. Modern construction materials and technologies; intelligent buildings. Telecommunications and ‘smart cities’. The planning, budgeting and programming of infrastructure provision. The use of Gantt charts in project management. Case studies of settlements employing more sustainable forms of infrastructure. ‘Work-shopping’ and preparing a Master Plan for the infrastructure requirements for a hypothetical settlement within either an urban ‘brownfields’ or urban ‘greenfields’ or metropolitan fringe or rural community context.
