Contemporary Planning Theory

Course aim

To require students to become familiar with contemporary theoretical debates about the nature and purposes of urban and regional planning.

Course content

This course [1] traces the development of contemporary planning theory in the Post War period, while [2] critically engaging with the intellectual debates contained therein. Central to this undertaking are the challenges to planning as a form of collective management and rational action heralded by the postmodernism turn that emphasises difference and pluralism. Here, issues of changing contemporary attitudes to planning, environmental management, distributional justice and the role of government/governance in a global age are explored. Drawing upon relevant case studies, this course considers planning as an intellectual process and professional practice of negotiation and debate.
