Course aim

To provide students with an introduction to the origins and scope of urban and regional planning and to contemporary issues in planning theory and practice.

Course content

Historical development of urban areas; cities as resource-distributing mechanisms; economic, social and cultural processes shaping urban and regional development. Origins of contemporary approaches to planning; alternative planning histories. Strategic planning; the promotion, regulation and assessment of urban and regional development. Contemporary planning and governance issues.
