Social Planning Techniques

Course aim

The topic aims to provide urban planning students with a critical understanding of the concepts and practices associated with social planning and their relationship to urban planning practice.

The course will develop practical skills appropriate to the identification and provision of social structures and services. It is essentially a ‘how to’ of social planning. Commencing with a critical examination of what is social planning, socio-demographic profiling and notions of service demand and provision, community participation and consultation, and communication, culminating in students developing a Social Plan.

Social Planning: background, context. Conducting and presenting social/community plans. Public participation and community consultation.

Social Planning Techniques builds on Social and Community Planning (ARCH 2043) and assumes an understanding of concepts such as diversity, social sustainability, social inequality, social capital, social inclusion, social development, social justice and location disadvantage.
