Introduction to Global Issues and Identities

Course aim

To introduce key issues in contemporary global societies and specifically to sociological concepts, knowledge and skills in order to provide an increased awareness of how these issues affect people as individuals, groups, states and societies.

Course content

This course introduces students to the impact of globalisation on individuals, groups and governments around the globe. The course is multidisciplinary – politics, sociology and international studies – and examines how the interconnectedness of the world’s economy and politics as well as the blending/resistance of culture creates freedoms and constraints for people. Central to the course is the question over what it means to be an ethical global citizen. The course explores the sociological identity categories of gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, religion and social class along with global institutions, such as the United Nations, global economic regulators, social movements and transnational corporations. The course prepares the students for writing in the social sciences and humanities areas.
