Course aim

To appreciate and understand the nature of relevant physical and chemical concepts in relation to important environmental issues and problems.

Course content

Chemistry of the air: the atmosphere as a resource, energy flow through the atmosphere, pollution of the atmosphere and its prevention. Chemistry of the land: mineral resources, agricultural chemistry, energy production and use. Chemistry of the waters: water as a resource, pollution of water, water treatment. Detection and determination of chemical species: IR, UV-VIS, atomic absorption, chromatographic, electrochemical and other instrumental techniques will be introduced for the identification and determination of chemical species of environmental significance.
